Electrolyte Supplementation for Endurance Horses: Effects on Fluid Losses and Performance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Administering oral electrolyte supplements to endurance horses is a well-accepted, yet poorly validated, practice. In horses supplemented with either a high-dose (HD) or low-dose (LD) of electrolytes in a 80-km ride, we found no difference in body-mass loss or competition time, yet estimated water intake and rider assessment of performance were improved with HD. However, hypernatremia and hyperchloremia developed in some horses receiving HD, which suggests that electrolyte supplementation may not be completely innocuous. Fluid and electrolyte supplementation after prolonged moderate-intensity exercise enhances muscle glycogen resynthesis in Standardbred horses.
We hypothesized that postexercise rehydration using a hypotonic electrolyte solution will increase the rate of recovery of whole body hydration, and that this is associated with increased muscle glycogen and electrolyte recovery in horses. Gluteus medius biopsies and jugular venous blood were sampled from six exercise-conditioned Standardbreds on two separate occasions, at rest and for 24 h fol...

The Effect of Level and Type of Dietary Fiber on Hydration Status following Dehydration with Furosemide
The loss of fluid and electrolytes in sweat during endurance exercise can be extensive, resulting in dehydration and poor performance if these losses are not replaced. Feeds high in fiber, especially those high in soluble fiber, possess a high water-holding capacity. Therefore, feeding strategies that optimize the level of dietary fiber and fiber type have the potential to benefit endurance hor...
متن کامل14-3-3 Protein is Detectable in Blood Serum and Fetlock Joint Synovial Fluid of High Performance Horses
Objective: To investigate whether 14-3-3 eta protein is detectable in synovial fluid and blood serum of high performance horses and to study whether any significant correlation between this and matrix metalloproteinase 1 and 3 in horse synovial fluid. Design: Clinical study. Animals: Eleven standard breed horses (seven high performances and four controls). Procedures: Blood serum and fetlock...
متن کاملFluid and electrolyte supplementation for exercise heat stress.
During exercise in the heat, sweat output often exceeds water intake, resulting in a body water deficit (hypohydration) and electrolyte losses. Because daily water losses can be substantial, persons need to emphasize drinking during exercise as well as at meals. For persons consuming a normal diet, electrolyte supplementation is not warranted except perhaps during the first few days of heat exp...
